WHAT IS A HACKATHON?

There are different types of hackathons. The Great Southern Hackathon uses the term 'hack' as a clever solution to a problem rather than to 'hack' into a computer or software without permission of the owner or company.

So you don't have to be a tech whiz, but you do need to be a creative thinker and cooperative collaborator!

THE GoSH HACKATHON PROBLEMS

Your team will have a choice of four problems to choose from. These are TOP SECRET until the Hackathon where they will be released to all teams.

Here are some clues.

Problems are related to our Region and Future

There are many different ways to gain points for your Team

The Sustainable Development Goals underlie each problem

WHAT ARE THE SDG'S?

The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

Read all the information upfront as a group. Appoint a record keeper

Research your topic. What has already been done? What innovations exist?

Idea Development - allocate roles, set goals, plan, test, improve

As a team, choose a problem to focus on. Note how you came to this decision

Idea Generation - no right or wrong. Write, draw, type every idea as a team

Prototyping. How can you effectively communicate your solution?

PRACTISE PROBLEMS

The growth of people living in cities (urbanisation) has led to significant challenges in transportation and getting around.

There is a pressing need for sustainable transport solutions that promote efficient, clean, and accessible travel.

You are invited to develop an innovative idea and practical solution that might change the way people move around cities, reducing congestion, environmental impact, and promoting a better quality of life for residents.

OPEN LEVEL

Consider solutions that leverage emerging technologies, data analytics, and smart infrastructure to improve the efficiency of public transportation systems, reduce travel times, and enhance inter-modal connectivity.

SECONDARY LEVEL

Consider the needs of all community members and design an equitable solution to provide access to transport for all residents.

Address challenges faced by vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities, elderly individuals, and those in underserved communities by proposing inclusive transportation systems.

PRIMARY LEVEL

Think about how we use transport now.

Can you think of a way future technology and your innovative ideas might make travelling better for the environment, easier for community members, and affordable for everyone?
